How does taxation not equal government ownership of the thing taxed?

Because if they belonged to the government i.e the people they wouldn't have to be taxed. The earnings could then be distributed to the people. In my opinion taxes are part and parcel of a capitalist economy and not necessary in socialist one Right now the poor are being taxed to fatten the Bank/Industrial Military Complexes
