Why did apple lose its innovation?

I mean they used to be cutting edge, using experimental processors such as the PowerPC series that were well above and beyond intel and amd, and then just decided to go with the mainstream and really give people no reason to buy there computers besides their looks and their OS. Why did apple just give up and join the mainstream crowd? This is the antithesis of what the company once stood for.
