What Sci-Fi Movie Is This?

All I remember is that these 3(?) high school or college kids were doing an experiment or making a machine. They didn't go back in time. Time converged on the school. The floor was foggy. I remember seeing Cleopatra. They had to drive down the road really fast to fix everything? I don't remember much. I just remember that I really liked it. HELP!!!
