What's up w/ Emo?

Okay, this prolly sounds stupid...but why is depression always linked to "emo", "goth", or cutting oneself? I get the "emo" and "goth" thing a lot...and people think I cut.....so yeah, this could be answered by a two year old...but anyways, yea.
