City University of New York - City?

So, I am a senior this year, and I have this special thing going on with this college. I don't know what it is just, seems interesting. But my mom TOTALLY does not want me to go there. Can anyone [especially you New Yorkers] give me any info on this school? The environment, the people, the academics, anything will help. Thanks to all ; )
